Makin' Family History!

Hello, everyone! It's been a while since I've posted anything on this blog, but, in truth, I've been busier than ever at researching our family's history! I've been with my family in Georgia, and took advantage of their proximity to make some serious progress on our family history. The most exciting development is finally having access to the new FamilySearch, the family history database of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This tool is amazing! I uploaded my family's pedigree and, within seconds, FamilySearch had found three other users with common ancestors and added their pedigrees to mine. It's like creating one huge, inter-connected global pedigree chart.

The second exciting development is that, with the help of FamilySearch, my family found several of our ancestors who are in need of their saving ordinances, namely baptism. Because we are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that God's children are baptized and then sealed to eachother and to Him in the temple in order to live with their families and with Him forever after their mortal death. We recently performed those ordinances for them in the Atlanta Temple, and look forward to sealing their families together during our next visit to the temple together this winter.

The temple is as significant now to God's children as it was to the people of Moses, Solomon and to the people of Israel in the days of Jesus Christ. We look to the temple as a symbol of God's love for His children. If you aren't familiar with temples, I would love to tell you more! Or you can visit www.mormon.org/temples to see pictures, ask questions or browse FAQ. Here's a picture of the Atlanta Temple:

Digitalized!

This weekend, my cousin Alan and I spent the better part of our Saturday digitally scanning stacks of family history documents...certificates, letters, journal entries, newspaper articles, obituaries, family group sheets, pedigree charts, maps, etc., etc...over 500 pages total. And can you guess who gave us that idea?....YOU! That's right, we did it all for you, our family! So, if you are, in any way, related to the Borgs, you now have access to hundreds of years of family history, all the way back to Old King Cole, in digital PDF format! WOW!

Alan is in the process of organizing these PDF documents for all us, and so I'll post a complete list as soon as possible. With the list, you can simply request one or all of them via the blog, and we can email or mail them on CD to you! How fun!

If you're as excited as we are, make a comment! YAY!

The Journal of Ole Peter Borg

My cousin Alan Higginbotham sent me an electronic version of Ole Peter Borg's journal via email. If any of you Borgs would like to have that file in your possession (who don't already) let me know! Send me an email or comment below with your email address (But if you choose the latter option, please type your email in the following format, to avoid having your email address sucked into some spammer's database: john.smith-a-gmail.com). Thanks!

I added "Labels!"

My cousin Alan's wife, Brandi, suggested that we keep information about each family seperate to avoid confusion, and I thought this was a great idea! I have a Mary Belle and a Cora Belle in two seperate family lines, and my mom and I always get them mixed-up when we talk about them! I've added the Labels menu on the top-right-side of the blog so that readers can choose to view the entries - by surname - that are related to their ancestries. I hope this is helpful!

Borg means "Castle"

I'm looking for information about the Borgs...especially the family of Ole Peter. I know someone must know something! I only have information about Ole Peter's parents and grandparents. I don't have much about Ole Peter's wife, Josephine Nielsen, either, except her parents' names (Hans and Nicolina).

Can anyone take a crack at the Petersen line? Hazel Alberta Lisonbee (Robert Lamar Borg's mother)'s mother is Sarah Petersen, and her father and mother are Niels Petersen and Bertha Mary Larsen from Salt Lake County, Utah, according the records I have. I'd like to find out where this family migrated from, or emigrated from.

Burning Questions

Family history research is like detective work. The clues aren't obvious at first, and names, dates and facts usually require a great deal of "investigating" to uncover. Every now and then, an ancestor seems to have vanished altogether without a trace. I was recently in touch with my Great Aunt Liz, who has generations' worth of information about my Grandpa Jenkins' parents and their ancestors, and with my Great Uncle Bob, who I hope can help me find out more about my father's mother's ancestry. These are the questions I hope to find answers to: (if you have any information, please let me know!)

Questions for the Jenkins:
  • What are the names of Harry Thornton Jenkins' mother and father?
  • What was Sidney Hall's mother Lillie M.'s, maiden name?
  • Who were the parents of Frank E. Goodman and his wife Ressie?

Questions for the Hedgepeths:

  • What was the name of Rufus Hedgepeth's first wife?
  • Is Rufus' mother's name Jemima Elsie or Elsie Jemima? Where were her parents from?
  • Who are the grandparents of Wilma Sue Bryant?

Hedgepeth Road

I recently discovered a road located in Canmer, Kentucky named after my ancestors, the Hedgepeths. Many of the Hedgepeth descendents still reside in Canmer, Kentucky (about 80 miles outside of Louiseville, Kentucky, and not far from Hardyville, where Rufus Hedgepeth was born). In fact, located on Hedgepeth Road is Hedgepeth Supply, still open for business.

Below is a map and the link; follow the link to Hedgepeth Road to see a picture. It's rather scenic!
